Winter School: A beginner’s guide to historical network research
Monday, November 28 – Thursday, December 1, 2022
This winter school is designed to provide a guide for graduate students and early career researchers interested in the study of social networks with a special focus on historical research questions. This four day course will cover a range of sessions, offering hands-on exercises in Python using Jupyter Notebooks, and providing room for discussing your own datasets. Our keynote speaker Prof. Dr. David Zbíral (Masaryk University) will elaborate on his work on the DISSINET project.
Syllabus
Day 1 (9:00 – 12:00 and 14:00 – 17:00 CET):
- Fundamentals of social network analysis
- Conceptualizing a network research design
Day 2 (9:00 – 12:00 and 14:00 – 16:30 CET):
- History of network research
- Network theories
- Network visualization
Public Keynote (17:00 – 18:30 CET)
Day 3 (9:00 – 12:00 and 14:00 – 17:00 CET):
- Network models and dynamics
- Epistemological implications of networks
- Mentoring and free exercises
Day 4 (9:00 – 12:00 CET)
- Wrap up and critical perspectives
How to apply
For the winter school, a familiarity with the basics of Python is required. Before the school starts, we will provide tutorials so everyone can have the basic understanding necessary for following the sessions.
The winter school is designed as hands-on sessions with tutoring (virtual; working language in English), therefore we can only admit up to 25 participants. The winter school is free of charge. Admission is possible until September 30, 2022.
