CfP: Open Access Volume on Networks of the Ancient Near East

We are pleased to announce this call for papers for an open access volume provisionally entitled ‘Networks in Ancient Near Eastern Studies’, edited by Ellie Bennett, Lena Tambs, and Jonathan Valk of the University of Helsinki’s Centre of Excellence in Ancient Near Eastern Empires (ANEE).

The book will assemble cutting-edge work on the application of network analysis in ancient Near Eastern studies. In addition to a general introduction and a concluding chapter tying the volume together, the work will consist of three sections devoted to (1) archaeological, (2) socio-historical, and (3) lexical networks. Each section will contain a general theoretical and methodological overview, accompanied by case studies illustrating the use of networks with relevant ancient Near Eastern material.

With this open call, we encourage scholars working on all periods and geographical regions of the Ancient Near East—regardless of background, identity, field, and affiliation—to submit proposals for case studies that will be considered for publication in the volume.

We expect to publish the work open access with Helsinki University Press, with a publication date in late 2025.

Please indicate which section is best suited to your case study and submit your preliminary title and abstract (max. 400 words) to eleanor.bennett@helsinki.fi. Formal guidelines for submitting the manuscript will be circulated upon acceptance of the proposal.

Abstract submission deadline –> 01 March 2024.

Questions may be directed to any of the editors at the following email addresses: eleanor.bennett@helsinki.fi, lena.tambs@helsinki.fi, and/or jonathan.valk@helsinki.fi.
