Journal of Historical Network Research, Vol. 5 No. 1 (2021): Beyond Guanxi: Chinese Historical Networks

Dear member of the HNR community,

Via Henrike Rudolph:

In the past two years, Chen Song (Bucknell University) and I have been co-editing a special issue in the Journal of Historical Network Research that highlights the growing body of scholarship on historical Chinese networks. Our goal is to initiate a dialogue between network scholars specializing in China and those studying other parts of the world and to promote interdisciplinary dialogue about technology and methodology. After two years of work, our special issue “Beyond Guanxi” is now officially released. It features research articles, as well as papers on databases and tools, with a temporal coverage from the Eastern Jin to the 20th century. The articles use a wide variety of different approaches to explore Chinese history and culture. Throughout this issue, network theory and analysis is used in combination with traditional source criticism and heuristics, biographical databases and records of publication as both a device of exploration and a tool of historical inquiry and verification.

The entire issue, like all other issues in the journal, is open-access and thus available to all readers and authors, free of charge, using a Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivatives 4.0 (CC BY-ND 4.0) license. Interested scholars may download the entire issue, or individual articles, from the journal’s website: https://jhnr.uni.lu/index.php/jhnr/issue/view/9.
