TY - JOUR TI - Netzwerkanalyse in der Mediävistik. Probleme und Perspektiven im Umgang mit mittelalterlichen Quellen AU - Jullien, Eva T2 - Vierteljahrschrift für Sozial- und Wirtschaftsgeschichte AB - Even though historical publications of the last ten years display an increased awareness of the usefulness of Social Network Analysis when exploring sociohistorical phenomena, its systematic application is mostly confined to modern periods. The article pleads for a more widespread use of Social Network Analysis in medieval studies by pointing out the potentials of this method even when dealing with fragmented and incomplete sources. The first paragraph gives a general overview of the historical development, the tools and the goals of Social Network Analysis, which tries to comprehend social phenomena by analysing their underlying relational networks. The second section refers to concrete examples of medieval studies, which have successfully implemented network approaches. It addresses their research questions, the limitations they encounter when applying network tools or how they deal with specific disciplinary problems such as the dynamical aspect of historical relational data. The last part is concerned with the handling of data, which is too incomplete to allow for the creation of coherent networks. On the basis of examples taken from her on-going PhD thesis, the author demonstrates how it is possible to generate networks, which are fit for analysis by means of two-mode-networks and their transformation into one-mode-networks or by means of shrinking network data respectively.
