PhD Position “Network Models for Historical Research: A Multilayer Approach”

The Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) (https://www.fbk.eu/en), in cooperation with the Department of Mathematics at the University of Trento, as well as the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science Berlin (MPIWG) (https://www.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de) announce a grant for a fully funded PhD scholarship on Data Science with topic:
“Network Models for Historical Research: A Multilayer Approach”
Mathematics are revolutionizing the study of history in an unprecedented way, creating new research opportunities and promoting the emergence of new perspectives.
The candidate will develop novel mathematical models, mostly based on multilayer networks, to explain from a social and historical perspective how knowledge and ideas transform. The research endeavor will be at the juncture of mathematics, digital humanities, and history of science. The historical data derives from research efforts in the project “The Sphere. Knowledge System Evolution and the Shared Scientific Identity in Europe” (https://sphaera.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de).
The ideal candidate has a strong background in computer science, physics, mathematics or related areas and is strongly motivated to work in an interdisciplinary environment. The candidate is expected to enroll at the University of Trento and will perform his/her research activity at FBK, within the Complex Multilayer Networks (CoMuNe) Lab.
Fluent English is an additional requirement. Further languages such as Italian and German are welcome but not required.

The Complex Multilayer Networks (CoMuNe) Lab is the Research Unit of Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) for modeling and analysis of complex and interconnected systems. Multilayer modeling often provides more insights than more traditional approaches, because they allow to naturally integrate available structural/relational/dynamical information.
We use Network and Data Science to study structure, dynamics and resilience of real-world natural and artificial systems, from the human brain to society, at the edge of statistical physics, applied math and computer science.
