Submissions

Author Guidelines

The Editorial Board welcomes proposals for papers centered on historical network research into any period of the recorded human past, from Bronze Age civilisation to contemporary history.

We accept submissions in the form of articles as well as reviews of books, projects and datasets. Articles are expected to present substantive and original findings and should not exceed 60,000 and 90,000 characters (incl. white space, footnotes and bibliography). Reviews should not exceed 15,000 characters.

Accepted submissions will undergo a double-blind peer review which includes an assessment of both their historical and methodological quality. JHNR offers complimentary proofreading for articles accepted for publication as well as a professional typesetting service. We do not charge any fees for article submissions, processing or publication.

Formatting

Languages

While American English is the language of choice, articles can also be submitted in German and French. All articles (but especially those articles written in a language other than English) should be accompanied by an abstract of no more than 300 words in American English which gives the salient points and arguments, and should also be indexed by no more than 5 keywords.

Figures

Illustrations and figures are included in the text document and will also be uploaded as a separate zip file. Image files should be submitted preferably in a vector format (e.g. svg) or as high resolution images (jpg, png) with 300 dpi. If you do not own the copyright of your illustrations, please obtain the appropriate permissions for publication.

Manuscript and Review Templates

All submissions must adhere to the Author Guidelines and the Article Submission Template. Reviewers are asked to use this Template for Reviews.

Other Formatting

Please avoid additional superfluous formatting of the text and avoid highlighting (bold, all caps or underlined) sentences or parts of sentences. Italics should be used for foreign-language terms (including Latin) as well as for journal names and book titles.

Please use double quotation marks (English: “” – German: „“ – French: «») for titles of book chapters, articles, films, etc. Terms you wish to distance yourself from should be rendered with single quotation marks (English: ‘’ – German ‚‘ – French: ‹›).

Direct quotations should appear in double quotation marks, quotations within quotations in single quotation marks. Longer quotations should be rendered in a smaller font size (single-spaced; see Word Template), with quotation marks optional.

Please do not use abbreviations in the main body of the text. Units, currencies and numbers from one to twelve (as well as ten, twenty and every other multiple of ten up to one hundred) should be spelled out in full. The standard decimal mark is a point (“.”). Please use a comma to separate thousands (i.e. “2,000.00”).

Please use the European writing style for dates (18 September 1982, not September 18, 1982 and 18/09/1982, not 09/18/1982).

References and Bibliography

References (in footnotes) and a comprehensive bibliography should be provided based on the Chicago Manual of Style Online, 16th edition (Notes and Bibliography). In case of doubt, authors should refer to the Chicago Manual of Style homepage (https://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html) for detailed instructions.

Authors using reference management software (e.g. Zotero, Endnote, etc.) should use the pre-set Chicago Manual style: https://www.zotero.org/styles/chicago-note-bibliography-16th-edition.

All historical sources should be quoted in accordance with prevailing discipline standards and included as a separate section at the top of the bibliography. All references must be given in footnotes. Footnote numbers should always be placed after punctuation marks.

Where there are two or three authors, all should be indicated (e.g. Müller, Schmidt & Heinrichs). Where there are more than three authors, please only indicate the first and add “et al.” (in italics).

Please indicate places of publication in a consistent manner depending on the language of the article. If there are ambiguous US place names (i.e. Cambridge, UK, vs Cambridge, Massachusetts), the relevant state abbreviation or acronym should be included in square brackets (i.e. [MA] or [Mass.]).

The year of publication of forthcoming titles should also be indicated with square brackets (i.e. London [2018]) or, if the date of publication is not yet known, with “forthcoming”.
